About Nationwide

Nationwide realised that working classes found it hard to get credit and find secure, comfortable, and long-term personal loans.

It is at this point that the idea of a mutual society was born. It enabled ordinary, working class people to save & borrow money for land and materials that was to be used to build their own homes and this is our proud heritage. The most important feature is that this is built first and foremost on the needs of the people.

Since various mergers, we are now the now the world’s largest mutual financial institution, the UK’s second largest mortgage provider, and one of the UK’s largest savings providers. What makes our services so popular? The fact that we have a heritage, culture and ethos that remain unique and a solid business foundation is why we are a popular choice among consumers.
